Nasmyth’s Steam Hammer

We are indebted to Christopher Jones for providing us with the history of this Nasmyth 7cwt hammer, number 240. The hammer was ordered by John Hartop on 23rd Dec 1851 for Elsecar New Yard in South Yorkshire. It cost the princely sum of £200, plus £40 for the anvil and base plate.

The colour was determined by analysing the existing finish. Original sign-writing has been replicated and the display will be finished off by a canopy courtesy of Salford Council.
