Fernilee Methodist Church
This small local church in the High Peak had a disaster one Sunday when the railings, being leant on by parishioners, fell into the graveyard. Luckily no one was hurt, but the railings and stone needed some care and attention.
The church and its associated railings are Grade II listed, and our approach was guided by conservation principles and budget constraints.
We aimed to retain as much of the original fabric as possible. While many decorative elements had deteriorated and spalled over time, only the structural components were replaced or restored to manage costs effectively. All loose decorative items were secured in place to preserve their integrity.
The existing copings were reused but carefully reordered to enhance the structural stability of the posts. Where necessary, a small number of coping stones were replaced on a like-for-like basis using stone sourced from a local quarry and tooled to match the original detailing.
