Islington Juilet Balcony

The project consisted of two main components:

Restoration of Existing Cast Iron Balconette

The existing cast iron balconette was carefully restored to preserve its historical character and structural integrity. This process included thorough cleaning to remove corrosion, the repair of damaged or corroded sections using traditional techniques and compatible materials and recoating with our heritage approved paint system.

Manufacture of a New Matching Replica

The original balustrade was used to develop drawings and patterns with increased height to enable us to cast a new balconette to match the restored original in design and detail. This included accurate pattern-making based on the restored unit and our approved drawings, traditional sand casting in iron to match material and craftsmanship and finishing, coating and detailing to ensure seamless visual integration with the original.

Iron castings for this new balcony were produced using new pattern work (moulds) created from the original design, with the added benefit of a height increase.

Working closely with structural engineers, we installed the balcony framework to existing structurally sound brickwork. The contractor then made good the finishes to the wall, hiding the fixing plates from view.
