Old Colwyn War Memorial
This memorial honours the men and women of Old Colwyn who gave their lives in times of war. To recognise their ultimate sacrifice for King and country, a new bronze plaque was added to include further names of those who were missed from the original WW1 memorials.
We produced a new cast phosphor bronze plaque using purpose made pattern work, beginning with the design and fabrication of a bespoke wooden pattern tailored to the precise dimensions and typeface required. The plaque was cast using traditional sand casting techniques to ensure sharp definition and durability. Once cast, the surface was fettled, chased, and toned by hand to achieve a refined finish appropriate for its commemorative purpose. The finished plaque was then installed with concealed mechanical fixings, ensuring both security and a clean presentation. It now stands as a permanent tribute marking the centenary of the end of the First World War.
We visited the site to survey the location for the new plaque and to take detailed measurements and photographs of the existing plaques, ensuring that the new plaque would be an incredibly close reproduction in all respects to the originals.
Our patternmaker crafted each individual letter and set them out by hand, ensuring precision and authenticity in the final design.
Once completed, the pattern was used to cast the plaque in solid bronze. Our foundry takes great pride in achieving the highest level of detail through traditional sand casting techniques, ensuring exceptional quality and definition in the finished piece.
The casting was hand finished with a Bronze Metal Antique (BMA) tone and renaissance waxed by hand to enhance its depth, protect the surface, and provide an enduring appearance.
The new plaque was then securely installed on site in time for an upcoming memorial service, ensuring it would be in place as a fitting tribute for the occasion.
