Private House – Ashbourne, Derbyshire

We were tasked with replicating a pair of heavily corroded and incomplete cast iron windows on a wonderful period listed private house in Derbyshire.

The original cast iron windows were incomplete and in very poor condition as was the stonework in which they were fitted. There was enough of the castings remaining to confirm glazing bar dimensions and centres to enable us to survey and provide our patternmaker with dimensions for the new replica moulds (inner and outer frames.

Iron castings were made and new toned brass furniture added then the frames were putty glazed with heritage glass. The frames were then installed to restored stonework with very tight tolerances. The light that passes through the slender sections is amazing and could not be achieved with timber or modern alternatives.  The client could now add secondary glazing to improve thermal losses and to draft proof the windows.
